| Vedic and Western Astrology Explained | ||||
Both Vedic and Western Astrology are predictive and analysis systems based on a person's date, time, year and place of birth. A map of the heavens with the position of the planets is constructed for the time, date and locality of birth. The astrological chart or rasi is divided into twelve sections or areas of the sky that surround the earth and interpretations are given based on the postions of the planets and constellations (signs) in this birth chart. Both Western and Vedic Astrology (Jyotish ) have their strengths and weaknesses and many modern astrologers both in India and the West use techniques from both systems for interpretation and prediction. While general interpretations can be gotten from textbooks or computer programs more specific information should come from the astrologer's own intuitive and psychic abilities. Astrology can be used to examine many areas of a persons life. In general an astrologer is asked to look at the basic trends and conditions of a persons life and usually this will mean exploring issues involving job, work, business, finance, health, romance, marriage children etc. One of the most important aspects of astrology is the ability to take advantage of good transits or dashas and to prevent negative transits or dashas from causing harm. This is done generally through the use of remedies in Vedic Jyotish. These remedies can involve the wearing of gems or yantras the chanting of mantras ,devotions to various deities and the performance of homas (fire rituals). The Vedic and Tantric traditions of India give very powerful techniques for making changes in ones life and if the practices are persisted in one can see definite changes in ones life within 40 days and often times sooner. The core techniques used in the Indian traditions are the chanting of mantras to activate good fortune or chanting of mantras to mitigate bad fortune. When the chanting of mantras is done during a fire ritual (Homa)the effects are much amplified. A knowledgable Vedic astrologer will know hundreds of mantras for various purposes and will help the client choose the mantra best suited for their current situation to improve their life. If a Homa or fire ritual is called for he will recommend a particular type of Homa and a particular Pundit will be recommended to perform this ritual. Ideally the client should be present when the homa or yajna is performed.
