Most massage schools require all therapists to receive their basic training in Swedish Massage. However, once this is mastered the therapist can learn many more techniques in order to specialize. Daniel specializes in the following:

Swedish Massage
Ayurvedic Massage
Reiki Energy Healing

Basic Techniques of Swedish Massage:

  • Traditional Swedish Massage uses five main strokes, and many variations, to achieve its relaxing and healing effects. Many therapists use a variety of techniques. Effleurage consists of long, gliding strokes from the neck down to the base of the spine or from the shoulder down to the fingertips. When done on the limbs, all strokes are toward the heart to aid blood and lymphatic flow. It is done with the whole hand or the thumb pads. Effleurage is designed to acquaint the therapist with his or her subject’s body and vice versa.

  • Petrissage involves gently lifting muscles up and away from the bones, then rolling and squeezing them, again with a gentle pressure. It generally involves kneading and compression motions - rolling, squeezing, or pressing the muscles to enhance deeper circulation. Petrissage attempts to increase circulation with clearing out toxins from muscle and nerve tissue.

  • Friction is the most penetrating of the strokes, and consists of deep circular or transverse movements made with the thumb pads or fingertips. The therapist applies deep, circular movement near joints and other bony areas (such as the sides of the spine). Friction breaks down adhesions, which are knots that result when muscle fibers bind together during the healing process, thus contributing to more flexible muscles and joints.

  • Tapotement consists of a series of briskly applied percussive movements, using the hands alternately to strike or tap the muscles for an invigorating effect. There are many variations on this stroke. It may be applied with the edge of the hand, with the tips of the fingers, or with a closed fist. Tapotement attempts to release tension and cramping from muscles in spasm.

  • Vibration or Shaking, involves the therapist pressing his or her hands on the back or limbs, and rapidly shaking for a few seconds. It boosts circulation and increase the power of the muscles to contact. Vibration is particularly helpful to people suffering from low-back pain.

Basic Techniques of Ayurvedic Massage:

Ayurvedic Massage(Abhyanga) is a form of massage that was developed in India several thousand years ago to create balance, healing and general well being for the body -mind complex. There are many techniques available for the massage therapist including several cleansing techniques known as panchakarma which can involve special dietary routines along with external treatment of the body ,and skin cleansing regimens. A variety of oils are used in the ayurvedic traditions and these are formulated on the basis of the patient's personal needs and their individual body type.

Unlike western style massage Ayurvedic techniques include more work done on the areas of the head and the feet. Most practitioners of Ayurvedic massage utilize the subtle anatomy systems of marmas and chakras.

While the chakras are well known to most people the marmas (107 pressure points) are considered very important in ayurvedic massage and like the pressure points and meridians in chinese acupressure these are given special attention during a massage. While long strokes are used for many parts of the body, ayurvedic massage uses circular motions for the joints and the solar plexus. All levels of intensity are used in Ayurvedic massage including light, medium or deep tissue massage based on the clients needs. Like many western systems Ayurvedic massage also uses the basic techniques of tapping, rubbing ,kneading and squeezing.

Another important factor in Ayurvedic massage is the concept of doshas and the five elements. Theses doshas are vata(wind),pitta(bile) and kapha(mucus) while the five elements are: air, earth, fire, water, and spirit (Akasha). Particular temperaments and physical body types are also classified according to dosha theory. Within the physical body a harmony of the doshas is desired for optimum health and general well being. One of the goals of ayurvedic massage is to create a balance between the doshas. It is common for the ayurvedic therapist to take the clients pulse with three fingers to ascertain which dosha is prominent at the time of the massage. There are a variety of traditional techniques and sequences available for the Ayurvedic massage practitioner and each practitioner will tend devolop their own particular style.

Reiki Energy Healing

The condition of a muscle group tells a lot about how the injury or stress occurred. By applying energy healing techniques directly to the muscle group, Daniel can help you bring healing attention to the area.

The most popular form of energy healing technique today is Reiki which is universal life energy which is activated in the client by the healer. Reiki is also used for self-healing but the effects are said to multiply when one receives Reiki treatments from one or more practioners. Reiki has been found by many to also facilitate healing and balance on emotional and mental levels. When combined with massage it has been found to be effective not only for stress issues and some health issues but also can be effective in healing emotional trauma and pain.

Reiki energy is usually experienced as a warm relaxing energy that promotes serenity. Reiki used alone (without massage)is generally sent to the patient thru the palms of the hands of the therapist starting at positions on the head and working down the front of the body. The patient is then turned over on the massage table and various positions on the back are treated.
